Visit from HPE Researcher Dr. Utz-Uwe Haus

2024

We are excited to announce that Utz-Uwe Haus, Head of the HPE HPC/AI EMEA Research Lab (ERL), visited our lab to give a talk on July 15th 2024.

About Utz-Uwe Haus

Utz-Uwe Haus leads Research and Development for HPE in Europe. He studied mathematics and computer science at the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin) and holds a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Magdeburg (Germany). Haus has an extensive background in nonstandard applications of mathematical optimization in fields such as chemical engineering, material science, and systems biology.

After five years as a senior researcher at the Department of Mathematics at ETH Zürich, he co-founded the CRAY EMEA Research Lab (CERL) in 2015, which he later transformed into the EMEA part of Hewlett Packard Labs. His current research interests include enabling middleware for the sustainable and secure use of HPC systems and digital twins.

Abstract of the Talk: “Data Movement and the Data Bridge in the Destination Earth Climate Adaptation Digital Twin”

The rise of Digital Twins has revolutionized the design and testing of disruptive technologies, creating virtual laboratories where data streams between real-life measurements and computational models. One prominent example is Destination Earth, a European Flagship Initiative aiming to develop a highly accurate digital model of the Earth on a global scale. This initiative will leverage the EuroHPC Pre-Exascale and Exascale systems, federating workload and potentially workflows.

However, this considerable influx of data presents the well-known High Performance Computing (HPC) challenge of handling data-intensive workloads. Deficiencies in systems software appear at multiple levels of the stack, from workflow management in orchestrating and coupling applications to memory hierarchy where memory and storage technologies converge with incompatible software managing data. Additionally, data governance and protection must be addressed within each workflow, not just in the data acquisition and product dissemination phases.

Haus will discuss the architecture and challenges of the project, as well as its current status at the end of the first project phase, focusing on the Climate Adaptation twin.

We are thankful for Utz-Uwe Haus stopping by our lab and sharing insights from his expertise in HPC and digital twins.
