Supercomputing Conference

This year’s SC was my second time attending. Unlike last year, I was not presenting, but I appreciated the ability to spend time taking in the conference and exploring rather than worrying about my presentation. In addition to helping out at UD’s exhibit hall booth like in previous years, I was a student volunteer for SC19 for my first time. I really enjoyed how this allowed me full access to the conference, which I didn’t have last year.

SC 2019 was great! This time, I was coming back as a second year student volunteer so I already had some experience and was much more ready for the conference. We had more people in the team this year so we were able to set up the booth in no time. This let me go around and explore a bit more than I did last year, which was really cool! It’s always nice to check out the fancy booths and see what new technologies are coming out for the next year.

SC18 was a great experience, and SC19 is even better! This year, we are having SC19 in dever convention center, and you are welcomed by the conference as soon as you get off the plane! The convention center is in the downtown. Look! Who is looking at us?! We get our badges and bags after registration. This year, we have a really nice bag! The booth’s super star is coming! Let’s welcome the great DMAC cluster!

My first experience at SC started with a reception and orientation for the Experiencing HPC for Undergraduates program. The program planners gave a brief talk on some basic terminology in HPC, and invited a few other professionals in HPC to give talks about areas of interest in HPC, touching on memory bandwidth, linear algebra, machine learning, and smart data movement. Each day throughout the week the HPC for Undergraduates program would have us meet a different panel to ask questions and learn about the field.

Attending SC18 was a great experience for me. This was my first conference ever representing an institution (UD) and I was a bit nervous at first. I did not really know what to expect and had not met the team I was going to work with throughout the week. This was also my first time being a student volunteer for the conference, so from the get-go, I knew it was going to be an intense weekend.

Attending SC has become one of my favorite things to do every year. SC18 marks the 6th time I have attended the conference, and every year is just as fun as the last. I’ve made a bunch of great friends over the years, and I have a ton of fantastic memories from this conference. Each year begins with assembling the University of Delaware booth, which is no small task. We have learned a lot from setting up and tearing down this booth every year.

It’s my first time attending SC, it’s a wonderful experience! We worked together to set up our lovely booth. It’s great to see all the posters hanging on the wall! Diego, Jose, and Xu are bringing cool stuff to the booth, the DEMAC cluster! It has arm cores and FPGAs on it. There are 24 such boards on the 3-D printed shelf! The exhibitions are also really great! We see many big companies showing off their novel techniques!
